Drawn by Vedran, the Sarajevo Cellist

A bronze paean to the unlikely hero of the war in Sarajevo. After a tragic bombing that killed 22 civilians in a market, Vedran Smailovic, a member of the Sarajevo Symphony could stand the violence no longer. Risking his life every moment exposed to snipers in the square, he took his cello to the site of the tragedy and played for 22 days as a symbol of the power of art over violence. This simple act has inspired millions around the world.
