Sometimes the external world makes its way into my paintings on a subconscious level. This was painting during the devastating hurricanes that flooded Houston and Florida and leveled Puerto Rico. I didn't realize it at the time, but the aggressive thick red brushstrokes may have been a response to what I was hearing on the news.
