Artist's Profile
‘Depth of Shadows’ My predominate method of shooting falls within this category. I consider myself a student of light. I marvel at its intricacies and wonder at its properties. It flows like water and echoes like sound. Apart from the deepest of oceans and the darkest of caves – the color black does not exist in Nature. By studying the Masters, such as Vermeer and Caravaggio, I attempt to emulate depth within my images, through the absence of light. A sense of being detracted from the scene and providing depth. In the manner of Mann Ray, I have also been intrigued by the use of actual negatives for display purposes… only through overexposing an image and examining the negative does the depth of an image become apparent. The gradient of white light, which is not readily obvious to the human eye, suddenly becomes a gradient of grey. The shadows within an image now become a tangible element. I enjoy taking my viewer into an environment they are familiar with, or at least seem to be familiar with. By the use of reflections and distinct focal points I create layers within my image. ‘Abstract Expressionism’ The first and most recent is Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, and Cubism. The common denominator throughout is the movement of the camera. I am able to create compelling works by using long exposure and physical manipulation of the camera, pan, tilt, zoom and any combination there-of. Most importantly all the images are captured in-camera… they require little post-production work. “If the image is not captured in-camera then the image never was.” This technique is not new and has been called many things; the difficult aspect is finding that within my environment that could be used to create these images.
