The Blue Garden

This encaustic abstract suggests the experience of looking deeply and closely into a blue hydrangea blossom -- at least my blue hydrangeas inspired this and I think I've caught some of the flavor of that delightful visual experience. Encaustic is highly-pigmented pharmaceutical-grade beeswax that's strengthened, and thus hardens, with damar resin. One paints "hot" -- in a molten state, and fuses each layer of paint. The thermal energy, air currents and the various behaviors of the different pigments, all effect the outcome. I've used some oil stick and powdered pigments as well which create certain surface variations. This is currently framed in a silver canvas floater frame that picks up on the silver shades in the painting, however, since it is painted on cradled panel, no frame is required.
